Turning A Space Into A Video Game: Until Dawn

This is the start of a blog post series where I create a space that is inspired by a video game/movie/tv show/etc. And not in an obvious way of just putting up posters of the game cover, there will be thought put into these decorations, and they will be as subtle as can be.

First Game Space Up: Until Dawn…

This is the starting space, nothing in it, and colored to give the vibe of the video game. Let’s make it a space that Until Dawn would be proud of!

The Walls, Floors, & Ceilings
– Rustic, eerie vibe of the mountain lodge and a stylish, modern aesthetic.
– Wood wainscoting on the lower walls to represent the cabin in the game.
– Add faux wood beams to the ceiling and/or vertically along the walls to echo the rustic architecture of the cabin.
– Keep the wood flooring, and the wood ceiling, but in a different style, as it makes sense for the cabin theme.
– A dark greenish grey for the wall color to represent the woods, but also the dark atmosphere of the game.
– A stone wall (could be wallpaper) to represent the mines in the game.

The Result:

Reminds me a lot of the mines in the game, so the Until Dawn tranformation is already pretty great!

The Windows, Curtains, Carpet, Lighting, & Outside View
– Multi-Paned cabin windows.
– Curtains with a distressed style to represent the therapist scenes where the room gets more destroyed as the game continues.
– The curtains would be a dark color to keep the dark, moody atmosphere of the game.
– The outside view would show the dawn, and the snow outside to represent when dawn arrives.
– A carpet with a design inspired by the game.
– Modern lantern-style light fixtures around the room to represent the lanterns the characters use in the game.

The Result:

Now the space is really starting to take on the game’s character. The space is about halfway done now, only have to add the decor, and some furniture, and it’ll be set!

Wall Art, Furniture, & Decor

– Illustrated poster with the plants/flowers seen in Until Dawn
– A framed blueprint of a cabin floor plan or an old map of a remote mountainous region.
– Poster with quotes said/inspired by the characters in the game. Or from the pages found in the game.
– Wood picture frames for the posters. Have the picture frames be slightly tilted to represent the messy situations the characters are thrown into in the game.
– Plaid blankets to represent the cold winter.
– A string of polaroid photos with a distressed style from an instant camera as decoration as it goes with the vibe of the game.
– Abstract figurines that subtly resemble the totems from the game.
– Living room side tables attached to the wall, and wicker baskets under those side tables for storage.
– Light switch with a cobblestone design on the light switch cover.
– Plants/flowers seen in the game. Since the game lighting is pretty dark throughout the gameplay, we can find these plants/flowers based on the location. And it’s a fictional location, but it’s based on the Alberta side of the Canadian Rockies in Canada which would include non-toxic plants such as: Aloe, Asparagus fern, Azalea, Begonia, Boston fern, Croton, Dracaena, Easter lily, Fig tree, Fuchsia, Gloxinia, Hoya, Impatiens, Jade plant, Lipstick plant, Snake plant, Spider plant, Umbrella tree, Weeping fig, Yucca, etc.
– The plants could be by a window that gets enough light, so we could add a planters box under one of the windows. Or the plants could be on the wall in planters diagonally to each other.

The Result:

And there you have it! A space that is inspired by & has references to Until Dawn the video game without being too obvious about it. Until Dawn in space form!

Notes
– The background (walls, wood floors, etc.) should be dark and moody for the main atmosphere of the game, but then the stuff in the space should be lighter in color representing the hope when dawn finally arrives.
– The living room would represent the game the most, since that’s the main gathering spot for the characters.

The space looks great! If you want to see any more spaces themed after Until Dawn, or another video game/movie/book/etc., just add a comment to the comment section and I’ll pick my favorite option to create!

I hope you all have a spook-errific day today!
