If you’re like me, you have a shelf maybe even more of books that you haven’t read, or maybe you’ve read some, but definitely not all.
I didn’t know how I was going to be able to read them all or be motivated to because while I really do want to read all these books, I just feel like I need to be working on some thing else being productive in another way. So a solution to this was writing about it on my blog, because not only am I getting through my book collection, but I am also adding to my blog post collection.
I will be reviewing these books that I read and commenting on what I think, as I go through this book journey and you can follow along with me.
Book #1: The Hunger Games By Suzanne Collins
*I will try to be as vague as I can be in these comments, not trying to spoil you!*
I’ve watched all the movies, and now I think it’s time to read the books. I’ve heard good things (and sad things) and I’m ready to see what all the hype is about!
It’ll especially be interesting to see what Katniss is thinking throughout the book since we had to guess in the movie.
Opening the book: Some cool designs, and the ‘Part I “The Tributes”’ is daunting knowing what happens.
Chapter 1: There’s Always A Tribute
“The chapter numbers and the graphics around them are really unique and interesting.”
“Savage to think that about her mother ‘Or so they tell me.'”
“Woah woah woah, rude about the cat, he’s just living his life.”
“Katniss isn’t starting off so good in my eyes with her trying to drown a cat years ago because it was another mouth to feed.”
“Mmmm cheese, I could go for some cheese right now.”
“Flesh-eaters?!”
“They explain the dad a bit, and how he died which I don’t think was added in the movie.”
“Ugh, Gale…”
“Poor Lynx.”
“Okay the arrow in the bread is kiiiiiind of funny.”
“Maniacally upbeat, that is one way to describe Effie…”
“42?!”
“She’s got a point, yelling doesn’t really do much. Action is what would change the world they’re in, which makes her taking action later on with the rebellion so much sweeter.”
“Oh, actual camera crews, that’s kind of awkward. I wonder what they’re thinking.”
“The games are supposed to show that the Dark Days must never be repeated, but I’d just think it would cause them to happen again. The Capitol couldn’t hold them down forever and they would be naive to think they could.”
“District Thirteen… If you know you know.”
“Haymitch!… Of course he was the late one, should have guessed.”
“Well she wished so hard for it not to be her… It wasn’t her.”
Chapter 2: Peeta Deserved Better
“Just shows how even if it’s improbable, it’s always possible.”
“It seems brutal to go up there, hoping someone volunteers for you, and no one caring enough to. Prim is lucky to have someone care about her so much.”
“Staying silent would especially work on Effie as a sign of not condoning something, since she likes the applause I’m sure.”
“The famous gesture.”
“Haymitch Haymitch Haymitch… ‘More than you!’ Classic. Definitely taunting the Capitol after all they’ve done to him.”
“I don’t know why him plummeting off the stage and knocking himself unconscious is so funny, probably because I didn’t expect it but should have with how drunk he was.”
“Peeta! Noooo! I knew it was happening, but noooooo!”
“Same Katniss… same…”
“Awww… poor Peeta, no one volunteered for him. Not even his brothers…”
“He helped you in your time of need Katniss, you know he’s good people that’s why it matters to you.”
“Yeah, I’m pretty sure Peeta hasn’t forgotten…”
“That must have been hard… having to become the parent when your parent was right there but couldn’t be a helpful one.”
“I get that it would be hard to be so kind you give food away, but you don’t have to be so mean for no reason lady…”
“To deal with that, just to give her bread… what a saint.”
“It ’twas no accident!”
“Yeah… I think a thank you could be shown by not trying to kill him at all, but that’s just a thought.”
“How about we don’t put that into the universe, okay Katniss.”
Chapter 3: Verbal Manners Have Never Been So Important
“Probably not ask for payment? Will he or will he not? He better not…the trade is a good idea though.”
“Some people ain’t cut out for the hunting life. If I ever needed to, I would, but I wouldn’t like it. And I would most likely be constantly saying sorry.”
”Her mother just needs to take responsibility, and say that she won’t leave, not make up excuses. Just take responsibility and move forward.”
”Don’t be so sure… unlikely things have happened.”
”Stop bringing up killing Peeta, Katniss. I know that’s the point of the game, but come on. His father’s RIGHT there.”
”It’s good that Peeta’s father is nicer than his mother, but still sucks he has that kind of mother.”
“Aww, he’s so nice.”
“Ah, the pin scene that’s so talked about.”
“I can confirm. There is nothing romantic to you and Gale.”
“Useless games… the only reason they exist is because of revenge, keeping people in line, and pettiness. Well, the actual reason they exist was found out in the prequel to The Hunger Games, and that reason was even stupider.”
“…”
“That is a good tactic, useful for this type of game. Worked for Johanna, but I don’t think Peeta is aiming for that tactic.”
”Yeah, they’re not telling you ALOT…”
“It’s always a good time when the people use the thing that’s being used against them, against the evil creators, always very satisfying.”
”Huh, it’s cool that they didn’t die off (a big middle finger to the Capitol) kind of sad they can’t say words anymore, but really cool that they can still repeat songs if they want to.”
”That’s an interesting thing to know about her father, he seemed like a really nice guy, it’s sad they don’t talk about him much in the movies.”
”Well maybe if they had been given more food in the districts, the last two would have had better table manners…”
“Effie likes to talk about table manners, but she literally has no verbal manners.”
”At least they can laugh about something, not much to laugh about later on when the games start.”
”Uh… he just fell into his vomit… eesh.”
What I Think So Far:
So far not too much has happened, and I’m curious to know Katniss’s thoughts throughout the games. But I’m also worried since I know what happens because of the movies, and the games are not anything to mess around about.
I’m hoping Haymitch steps up and stops drinking as he gets to know his mentees, but I don’t know what to expect since there are things different from the movies.
I already know that the dynamic with Haymitch, Effie, Peeta, and Katniss won’t be the same as in the movie, which is sad, but I also know everything can’t be the same as the movies.
We will just have to see where it all goes.
May the odds ever be in our favor.
