Book Review

You’re living a normal life, the right amount of stress, until suddenly one day you’re boyfriend is stolen, you’ve lost an eye, and you wake up in a hospital room with no idea about what happened.

Well, that might not be your story, but it is Daisy’s in the The Red Mother: Complete Collection by Jeremy Haun and Danny Luckert. She doesn’t know what to do, so she hopes the detectives will be able to help, but her boyfriend, Luke, is gone without a trace. She tries to go on living her life, and even gets a new job, but something’s just not right. Her new eye (you know, the one that’s supposed to not work) is totally wigging out. She keeps feeling like she’s being watched, and honestly? Everyone’s acting weird. Can anyone be trusted, or is Daisy’s definition of “normal” officially toast?

I can’t say the story hooked me from page one; it’s more of a slow simmer than a full boil. A lot of time passes waiting for something big to happen, but it’s still a solid story overall. The characters were interesting enough, although some were more background characters, and it never really felt like you knew anyone. The puzzles, and not knowing if you could trust anyone made it more worth reading. The final showdown felt more blink-and-you’ll-miss-it, but at least the ending brought things to a hopeful close.

Overall, it’s a solid story: creepy, weird, and stylish, even if it takes its time getting there. I’d have to give The Red Mother a 3.8 out of 5 eyeballs. Good, just not quite the blood-red masterpiece I was hoping for.
